Who could have guessed that a Track and Field star from Peoria Illinois would find her groove through karaoke and emerge as one of Portland’s leading divas of Soul? Yet that is precisely the path that took Liv Warfield from All-American gymnast to nomination for Soul Tracks’ “Best New Artist” award in 2008.

After relocating to Portland Oregon on an athletic scholarship, Warfield honed her musical chops at local joints like the Ambassador Lounge, training her voice with the same rigorous discipline she had cultivated for sports. Her dedication and drive paid off, leading her to capture the attention of a national audience with her vocal agility.

Warfield emerged on Portland’s music scene in 2002 where she began performing with the hip-hop band “Money N’ Lovin.”. Liv took center stage in 2004 with her own band Liv & The Warfield Project. In 2006, B&M Records Inc released Warfield’s debut album Embrace Me. She has performed with a diversity of artists such as Prince, B.B. King, The Roots, and the Dave Matthews Band.

Entrepreneur’s Local Partnerships Help Kids Play

Well over half the kids in this country don’t have easy access to a community playground. That bothered Darell Hammond so much, he started an organization to create places for children to play. So far, over nearly 15 years, the group has helped build more than 1,800 playgrounds.

The group is called KaBOOM! — why is obvious once you see the magical explosion erupting on a patch of asphalt behind a charter school in Philadelphia.

In a space of just a few hours one day last June, about 100 untrained volunteers, led by Hammond, KaBOOM’s founder, turned a grim piece of asphalt into a bright, shining playground.

Darell Hammond says he founded KaBOOM! after reading a news story about the death of two children who suffocated while playing in an abandoned car; they had no neighborhood playground.

Creating Spaces To Play

In the middle of the hubbub at the Imani Education Circle Charter School in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Hammond shouts encouragement and tries to keep things moving.

“C’mon guys, c’mon. Jump in there, and help him out!” he calls out. Hammond is in his own version of heaven here: up to his ankles in wood chips, and sweat dripping from his forehead.

The school could never have paid for this alone, but Hammond says the playground is not a gift. He says KaBOOM! supplies 85 percent of the cash while the school must put up 15 percent. The Imani school must get the site ready, and it must take care of the playground once it’s built. ”Because what we’ve found through our experience is that when they put their own capital into it, they care about it, they maintain it, they’re invested in it,” Hammond says.

Investment and capital — these are terms you hear a lot from social entrepreneurs like Hammond. They are taking terms from the world of finance and applying them to all kinds of social problems.

Volunteers at the budding playground are running back and forth, carrying wheelbarrows full of mulch and screwing together long metal bars that will soon form the framework of the play structure. It looks chaotic, but everything is carefully choreographed. Music pumps all day to keep the energy high. Professionals prepare the site and do any heavy equipment work before the volunteers arrive. Bags of concrete, food and water are carefully staged. Even if some of the volunteers don’t show up, this structure needs to be finished in a day.

Key to KaBOOM!’s strategy is the idea of building partnerships — with big corporate sponsors like Home Depot, which has been a major donor for many years, or through spontaneous friendships like the half-dozen people at the playground site from The Dead Broke Rydaz, a bike, car and social club. Two of the Dead Broke Rydaz have kids in the school, and others are here because the group has a rule: You have to give back to the community.

Many of these people say they’ve never been part of anything like this. They’re using tools and mixing concrete for the first time. And many are giddy about how quickly the whole thing is coming together.

Some who have helped build playgrounds with KaBOOM! say the experience has changed them.

Bruce Bowman got involved with KaBOOM! when he was an executive with the ice cream company Ben and Jerry’s. Now, he works with KaBOOM! full time. ”I’d be willing to bet that a year from now, somebody from this build is out there doing a project somewhere on their own,” Bowman says. ”It may not be building a playground, but they will have caught this volunteer spirit and go out and do other projects.”

Partnership Building

The build moves forward relentlessly. At the beginning of the day, workers faced a mammoth pile of mulch that looked like it would take a bulldozer to move. But one wheelbarrow at a time, they move it across the yard. Within a few hours, it has been transformed into a soft carpet at the base of the structure.

Before you know it, it’s all over. A professional contractor checks each nut and bolt to make sure they’re tight. The group of sweaty, happy volunteers gathers for a group photo and a ribbon cutting. They all sport broad grins. “One, two, three, KaBOOM!” they all holler.

KaBOOM! hopes other groups will mimic the system it has developed. The group shares its strategies for raising money and for wrangling large groups of volunteers. Its chief evangelist is Hammond himself, who overcame a lot when he was a kid.

“I’m the seventh of eight kids. My father left my mother. After trying to care for us as best as she could for two years, we became wards of the court and went to a group home called Mooseheart outside Chicago, Illinois,” he says. Hammond tells that story often. Recently, he told it again to a class at the University of the District of Columbia that is studying different models of social entrepreneurship.

Hammond speaks warmly about growing up in a group home and about the playgrounds he had there. He says other kids should have at least a playground even if they have little else.

“And all the things may not be solved out of it, but we’ll at least be able to look back at the things we did do, when we did something together,” he says.

A few months later, the playground in Philadelphia’s Germantown neighborhood stands in the bright sun of a September afternoon. School has started again, and before kids hit the books, they hit the play structure.

This week, KaBOOM! plans to build playground number 1,870 in Atlanta.

8 months ago I wrote this article and put it up on facebook just to sit there. Since then I have had so man comments on it that I thought I would reprint it on to the showasepdx site.

This journal entry came from me wanting to share with others that even though it seems like very tough times at our current point in history, there is always a ray of light here for us to see that the sun is really shining behind those dark dreary clouds.

It was not until recently I realized that ..hey… I could keep complaining about the clouds and the gray and the constant rain Portlander’s you know what I mean! or I could embrace it and see what all that beautiful rain does for us on the positive side.

It is in that spirit that I share with you my heart and mind on the very important subject of Accepting Your Self and Accepting Life as it is while allowing the things your desire to align with you.

Journal Entry September 17th 2010

The past 3 years of my life have been the most difficult times I have ever gone through. Not only did my life I had been living for 15 years come to a screeching halt but I lost everything and I mean everything I had before. I left my home, my business, my relationship and all because of one thing, I was afraid to be WHO I AM.

I have seen so many of my fiends and family suffer at that one challenge called the TEST of Being who you really are.

Imagine if you could be all your Heart desires to be.That means your Heart not your ego or fear or things of that nature but YOUR HEART.

When you were a child you laughed, you played, you trusted and enjoyed being thrown up in the air and …well being LOVED and loving those who LOVED you.

Then…. unconscious adults and patterns of behaving from other children caused you to slowly close off to those emotions in an effort to protect yourself. And slowly you began to become another person.. or a person made up of your parents ideas, your brothers and sisters thoughts, your friends , authority figures and your religious view of who you are in the face of their Ideas about God and how YOU should behave, relate and act towards these ideas and concepts.

Soon your working in the ” Real ” World and you are working for that dollar. Working to create ” Happiness”

Then you realize your not happy and you seek out more of the old ideas you were taught to help you get ” Back into Shape” so as to not to seem so lazy or weird . ” Conform I will ” you say in your mind ” If I do not I will die ?” or so you FEAR this will happen.

Years later you find yourself still unhappy but because you want to make others happy and you also do not want to make any changes that could lead to your demise.. you move from one addiction to another.

You work really hard, or party really hard, drink and use drugs or you go to the other Polarity of being a GOOD BOY OR GOOD GIRL. You immerse yourself into rituals or religious study to rid your self of this desire to be more than you are so that you can become pure, whole, clean. You will do anything to rid yourself from shame and this guilt you carry.

Then you come to your breaking point. Something happens that gives you a choice-either Run from this feeling into the Abyss of Hopelessness and give up the dreams in your heart ( although you think it is just crazy feelings and thoughts that can not be realized) or … Face this Feeling and Accept it and Accept what is inside of you THE REAL YOU.

All people have chosen one or the other of these Choice Points.

The ones who choose to answer the call from within them to be who they really are which is- Gentle, Kind, Loving, Giving, Caring, these Beings begin to shine and heal and do great things.

Sure it hurts as you are opening yourself up to a world you long had forgotten, a world that most people call crazy or weird or childish. It is the world you left behind you when you began to conform to the thoughts and beliefs of those around you instead of following what you Knew was in your HEART. You Knew this a long time ago . You came here to do and be great things whether it be the most wonderful parent you could be or a great Inventor who helps change the course of the planet by his or her creativity. We are all here to be the Greatest BEING we can be. And that Being is WHO you are and is Who I AM.

I will share something from a book I have had the pleasure of reading that is helping me through my journey of being Who I AM.

Oregon Boar and Lamb Paired with Local Belgian Craft Beer

The tulips have ushered us into full time Spring and we are preparing another Open Kitchen Feast to highlight the beautiful food and artisan beer we have here in Oregon. Chef Andrew Garrett will take us on a guided tour of Oregon bounty by preparing a 5 course meal featuring local poultry, boar and lamb supplied by SuDan Farms. Each course will be paired with a Belgian style beer brewed over in Hillsboro by Ambacht Brewing.

Andrew Garrett is the owner/operator of High Heat Cataring. High Heat Catering not only brings fresh Oregon food to your location, Chef Garret takes folks on excursions into the country to visit farms, ranches, and the wild places to forage for delicacies.

This Open Kitchen will be hosted at Kitchencru, which is a shared use community kitchen. Because Kitchencru has 10 seats at the Chef’s table each of the Open Kitchen guests will be able to sit at the chefs counter for one of the five courses and interact with Chef Garret while he is finalizing that course.

This intimate five-course, five-glass dining experience will feature the Slavic creations of Jesse Skiles, chef and wine maker, paired with Teutonic Wines – set to take place on Saturday, May 14th (7:00 – 10 PM) at Abby’s Table (609 SE Ankeny, Portland 97214). Chef Jesse’s friendship with winemaker Barnubus, has given him an intimate understanding of Tuetonic Wines. Combined with an inspiring three-week swing through Eastern Europe and produce from Viridian Farms and Nikki USA, this dinner might take your pallet to places it never imagined.

The Open Kitchen breaks barriers between eater, kitchen and food producer. The goal is to educate local communities about their food and connect them to local farmers and producers as a resource for buying local. The Open Kitchen also promotes local entrepreneurs who are creating new and exciting businesses within food.

Each installment of The Open Kitchen explores themes related to the “Body” (health topic or theme related to food), “Land” (Biodynamic farms and wineries, local farms and food producer, and local communities), “How To” (Classes combined with dinner with an emphasis on easy, healthy cooking), and Local Businesses (Innovative food carts, breweries, bakeries, cocktail mixologists, CSA’s and farmers markets).
